My name is Roderick, I'm a musician and an avid chess player. I'm on track to finish my DM (Doctorate) in music composition in 2014 from FSU. I'm driven and focused, but easy-going. I was just baptized (sept 29th, 2012) and am looking forward to meeting new people, making new friends, and hopefully, finally getting married and having kids.
I enjoy all sorts of activities that I don't regularly engage in, like playing pool or going to the beach. Someday, when I'm finished with school, I'll have more time for those sorts of activities.
I play the pipe organ, jazz organ (with pedals playing the bass line) classical and jazz piano. I do some free-improv and I teach, as well. I maintain all those skills as best I can, but my main goals in music almost always revolve around composing in some way.
Tallahassee is pretty nice, but the likelihood that FSU will hire me right out of their program is very low. I'm most likely going to relocate, and though I've had some difficult long distance relationships, I'm willing to consider having one with the right person. Though I'm currently a student, I've enjoyed a musical career since the age of 15, and can easily find work. Given my profession as a musician, I've always had to consider the possibility that I might marry someone who makes more money than me. I'm ok with that. I'm also ok with having to find enough work to support a family with a single income, if necessary. All that said, my ideal next step would be to secure some college professor position, and work as a freelance on the side as a composer and organist/pianist.
I should also say that I'm professionally engaged as a chess coach, and am making more money teaching chess this summer than teaching music, believe it or not.
Anyway, those are just some thoughts going through my mind on this, the 14th of July, 2013. I hope you enjoyed reading it:)
