I think I’m pretty good at telling stories. Here’s an example…
A friend and his wife, in my ward, introduced me to his single sister in Utah. She and I began corresponding via email and then met briefly in person when she was visiting her brother and his family during Christmas. We both had interest in continuing to get to know each other so we continued to email and began talking on the phone and texting. A couple months later we decided it would be good to spend time together in person so I planned a trip to go visit her. Her mother insisted that I should borrow a family vehicle rather than get a rental car and, after a brief protest, I agreed that I would use a small truck that belonged to the girl’s brother-in-law. A few days before I was to fly out I started feeling like I was coming down with something so I bought some Airborne and began taking steady / liberal doses. I arrived in Utah (not feeling any worse but not really feeling any better either), met up with the girl, and rode with her to her sister and brother-in-law’s place to pick up the truck. We had a really good time. I met some of her family. She met some of my family in the area. I took her shooting. We ate good food. We went to the movies. Saturday night we were going to a concert and were driving through a fairly serious winter storm. As I’m driving (remember I’m driving her brother-in-law’s truck) we hit a spot of black ice and started to fish tail. I expertly maneuvered out of the fish tail just as we hit another patch of ice. I was no match for the second patch of ice and we spun sideways. We impacted the median head on and both airbags deployed. A police officer showed up and issued me a ticket for failing to maintain my lane. We then had to call a tow truck to take the truck 30+ miles north to a shop near her sister and brother-in-law. The tow truck was a two seater so she had to sit on my lap for the trip north. Also of note…I had started feeling worse mid-morning that day and by the next day the flu had hit me full on. Despite all of this she continued to have interest in getting to know me. Long story short, I must be pretty special…Now I can see everyone reading this right now saying, “Well, where’s the happy ending? Why is this couple not married today telling everyone the adorable story about how ‘Boy meets girl, boy wrecks girl’s brother-in-law’s truck, boy and girl live happily ever after’?” We went our separate ways a short time later because the long distance situation was not for her (her brother is still not speaking to her).
I really enjoy the outdoors. I’m currently serving as a Scoutmaster and really like taking the boys camping and teaching things that I have learned through scouting, the military, and on my own. The paperwork and advancement part of scouting is not my favorite. Luckily, for the boys, we have an Assistant Scoutmaster who is good at that. Shooting is one of my biggest passions. I own a mountain bike and would like to start riding it more than once or twice a year.
I like watching movies and usually surprise people with the breadth of genres that I watch. I am not a game person (video or board). The two main exceptions to that are Balderdash and Jenga.
I grew up in Indiana and currently live in Pennsylvania where I am an Engineer working in product development for a plastics packaging company. I was recently told by a saleswoman, while shopping for a recliner, that both of those things made sense (that I’m an Engineer and that I grew up in the Mid-West)…Whatever that means.
On any given Saturday morning there is probably a 50% chance that you will find me helping someone either moving in or out of the ward. This is the case for several reasons:
· I have a truck
· I worked for a professional moving company for a summer
· I am willing to help others
· I am SUPER strong
